West Loop Chicago

Affordable Housing

Located in Chicago’s West Loop, this project (yet to be renamed) challenges the profit-driven constraints of conventional double-loaded corridors. By prioritizing public health and environmental wellness, the design introduces a radical building block that breaks from traditional density models—the double loaded corridor. The architecture optimizes southern sunlight exposure and ensures natural cross-ventilation, transforming dense urban living into a breathable, light-filled ecosystem that puts human well-being above the proforma bottom line.

Studio, 1 bed, 2 bed, and 3 bed modules are arranged on a 45° grid and ‘pushed’ and ‘pulled’ to optimize unit count and views.

The 45° grid and varying heights optimize low sun angles during the long winter months and summer evening sunsets.

Inner courtyards are open to the air to further optimize equitable sunlight exposure, cross ventilation and vegetation growth.

As a result of challenging the conventional double loaded corridor, a thoughtful and unique design provides a much needed urban housing relief.
